Resource Guide: Stormwater Management

NCPC developed several resource guides to help applicants better understand the various authorities the Commission uses to review projects related to historic preservation, memorial site selection, certain airport and transit facilities, and more. This blog presents an overview of the resource guide on stormwater management.

Stormwater management is a key component to improve the National Capital Region’s water quality and reduce interior flooding. As the region is home to the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, Rock Creek, and their tributaries, federal and local government agencies developed strict regulations to reduce water quality problems caused by stormwater runoff. While federal and local agencies share similar goals, each jurisdiction has different performance requirements to limit the quantity of stormwater that can leave a project site. NCPC developed this resource guide to help applicants better understand the region’s varied regulations and how they relate to NCPC’s plan review process.

While the resource guide is not a regulatory document, it presents information on the relevant legislation, the Clean Water Act and Section 438 of the Energy Independence and Security Act, and NCPC’s review considerations in both the preliminary and final review stages. NCPC encourages applicants to use this guide to help integrate stormwater management practices early on in their site and building design processes to help them develop better site plans and submissions.
