Special Event: Open to the Public: What’s the Big Deal with a Little Security?

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM     Online Meeting
Live Stream: scheduled

Overview

What’s the big deal with a little security? Over time, well intended security measures often expand and lead to the erosion of public space. Providing safety for buildings and people often takes priority over public access and design when reacting to events and addressing future threats. But, at what cost to access to our most significant public spaces? Are the implemented security measures effective against evolving threats given the negative impact to public space? How can we project an image of a democratic and open society while also ensuring safety and security?

This panel discussion will consider these questions and the impacts on public life and public access. Panelists will also speak to the evolving waves of security trends that have shaped Washington, DC since 1995.

Presented by the National Capital Planning Commission and the DC Office of Planning.
