Scoping Meeting: National Desert Storm War Memorial
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Location
Overview
The National Desert Storm War Memorial (NDSWM) Association, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking public comments on the site selection of the proposed National Desert Storm War Memorial. This 30-day public scoping effort is the first step in the Environmental Assessment (EA) process the NPS is conducting in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1960 (NEPA). The purpose of the public scoping comment period is to provide the public with an opportunity to comment on the site selection of the memorial.
Two sites have been identified for consideration as a site for the National Desert Storm War Memorial: the Memorial Circle Area at George Washington Memorial Parkway on Columbia Island and the Constitution Avenue Terminus Area near 23rd Street NW. As part of this proposal, the NDSWM Association would design and construct a memorial at the selected site (design will be addressed under a second public scoping period). The NPS would be responsible for its long-term maintenance.
A public scoping meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on July 12, 2017 at 2020 K Street NW, Washington, DC. Greeters will meet attendees in the lobby of the building and escort attendees to the meeting room. This public meeting will also serve as the initial public meeting for the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The public and interested parties are invited to identify ways to avoid and minimize the potential for adverse effects to historic properties in the vicinity of the proposed memorial sites.
