Scoping Meeting: Arlington National Cemetery Southern Expansion Project
5:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Location
Overview
The Arlington National Cemetery (ANC), in cooperation with several agencies listed below, will hold a public scoping meeting to share information and invite comments on a proposed expansion and roadway realignment at the southern end of the cemetery.
Project Details
Arlington National Cemetery needs additional space in order to maintain future operations beyond the year 2037. The proposed expansion will create a new cemetery area contiguous with the existing cemetery by removing Southgate Road. Realignment of Columbia Pike and the Columbia Pike/Washington Boulevard interchange (adjacent to the Pentagon) along with a new South Nash Street will maintain roadway access and support the short- and long-term multimodal transportation needs and goals for the Commonwealth of Virginia and Arlington County. The roadway realignment will also maintain access to the U.S. Air Force Memorial and create public access for the proposed 9/11 Pentagon Memorial Visitor Education Center.
Meeting Details
At this meeting, members of the public will be able to provide comments concerning the scope of issues to address in the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Arlington National Cemetery’s proposed southern expansion. Representatives from ANC and the cooperating agencies will describe the proposed project and be available to answer any questions. Interested parties are also invited to participate in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Comments received during the scoping period will be used to refine the issues analyzed in the EA.
This meeting is being held in accordance with The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. NEPA requires federal agencies to analyze the potential effects of proposed projects, such as ANC’s proposed southern expansion, before making decisions. The NEPA process allows opportunities for public input to help identify relevant issues (scoping) to be analyzed as part of the Environmental Assessment and future decision making process.
