Scoping Meeting: Gold Star Mothers Monument

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Location

Women in Military Service to America Memorial
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia

Overview

The Gold Star Mothers National Monument Foundation proposes to establish a permanent commemorative work honoring the sacrifice of Gold Star Mothers, whose children have perished during military service.  The United States Congress authorized, in Public Law 112-239, the commemoration of the sacrifices made by mothers, and made by their sons and daughters who as members of the Armed Forces make the ultimate sacrifice, in defense of the United States.

The Gold Star Mothers National Monument Foundation, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), has identified the belvedere immediately south of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge in Washington, DC and two sites near the Arlington National Cemetery Visitor Center for consideration as a site for the Gold Star Mothers Monument. As part of this proposal, the Gold Star Mothers National Monument Foundation would design and construct a memorial at the selected site.

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the NPS and Gold Star Mothers National Monument Foundation are preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to identify alternatives and assess the potential impacts for the proposal. The National Capital Planning Commission and Arlington National Cemetery have been invited to be cooperating agencies.

As part of this planning effort, a public scoping meeting will be held by the NPS and the Gold Star Mothers National Monument Foundation on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.at the Women in Military Service to America Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Please note the Arlington National Cemetery Metro station closes at 7:00pm. Parking is provided on Memorial Avenue during the public meeting. During this open house, the project team will be available to discuss alternatives and site characteristics.
