Speaker Series: Sustainable Installation Planning

With more than 300,000 buildings and 2.2 billion square feet of building space, the Department of Defense has a footprint three times the size of Wal-Mart. Facing increasing energy costs and changing operational requirements, the Department is undertaking major steps to create bases and installations that can better meet its evolving needs.

Participants heard how the Department is using comprehensive master planning and updated construction and operations standards to plan, build, and operate more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable facilities that support its mission and also respond to the concerns of host communities, particularly in urban settings.

The program featured a keynote by Dr. Dorothy Robyn, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Installations and Environment, followed by a panel discussion and an in-depth presentation on the soon-to-be-released update to the Unified Facilities Criteria by Dr. Mark Gillem.
