December Meeting Recap

NCPC provided feedback on concept plans for upgrades to Union Station’s lighting that accentuates the station’s architecture and improves safety. Commissioners praised the project’s goals and use of fixtures in ways that are not easily visible.

The Commission reviewed four potential sites for the Women’s Suffrage National Monument. NCPC found that the Constitution Gardens West site best meets the applicant’s goals, due to its thematic connections to nearby memorials and visual connection to the Washington Monument.

Commissioners approved preliminary site development plans for the Fallen Journalists Memorial, whose design includes a hardscape stone plaza overlaid with a grove of trees and cast glass elements. They requested more information about the glass elements and recommended moving the east entryway to align with views of the U.S. Capitol.

Representatives of the District of Columbia and Washington Commanders briefed the Commission on the proposed 65,000-seat stadium that will serve as an anchor of the 180-acre site that formerly housed RFK Stadium.
