October Meeting Recap

NCPC provided comments on concept plans for the Fallen Journalists Memorial. The concept includes a stone plaza with a grove of trees and three outdoor areas within an array of cast glass elements. Commissioners supported the unique use of glass but questioned its durability and maintenance needs, as well as accessibility throughout the site. They also recommended efforts to reduce the heat island effect of the fully paved surface.

The Commission provided comments on concept plans for new National Mall Comfort Stations, which would offer bathrooms and food and refreshment services. Commissioners praised the project’s goals, and most found the proposed station materials to be appropriate.

NCPC approved final site and building plans for two projects. The first was for the replacement of a Veterinary Treatment Facility at Fort Belvoir. The second was for an addition to the Leckie Education Campus in Southwest Washington.

NCPC Centennial Exhibit Concludes Regional Display with SW Tours

Planning Washington: Capital and Community will have its final display at Arena Stage from October 30 to December 3. Experience the exhibit come alive through four free guided tours of Southwest Washington’s planning and architectural history in November.

NCPC Honored to Receive Awards by Regional Civic Organizations

The American Planning Association’s National Capital Area Chapter selected NCPC’s Federal Workplace Scenario Planning Study as this year’s Outstanding Tool and the Beyond Granite pilot exhibition Pulling Together as Outstanding Project. Beyond Granite was also recognized as a “Vision Award” winner by the Committee of 100 for the Federal City.

NCPC Selects New Pennsylvania Avenue Plan Design Consultant

At the October meeting, NCPC staff briefed the Commission on the selection of DAVID RUBIN Land Collective to lead the design of a new Pennsylvania Avenue Plan in collaboration with HR&A Advisors, selected earlier this year. The New Pennsylvania Avenue Plan will guide the redesign and management of the iconic street into a welcoming, inclusive public space, and exceptional and dynamic destination.
