Description

(1809-1865) 16th U.S. President. Inscribed: "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever." Led country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War. Introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The first American president to be assassinated.
