(1764-1850) Sometimes called "The Father of Uruguayan Independence." Led Gauchos to fight for Uruguayan state separate from Argentina/free of Spanish domination. Engraved at base of statue: "From the people of Uruguay to the People of the United States. Liberty of America is my dream and its attainment my only hope."
