(1801-1870) First Admiral in the U.S. Navy, a title created for him during the Civil War; captured New Orleans and controlled the Mississippi River. Remembered in popular culture for his order at Battle of Mobile Bay, paraphrased: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
