(1778-1803) Irish patriot and early leader in the cause of Irish Independence, on indefinite loan from the Smithsonian Institution. Inscription includes excerpts from Emmet's speech during the trial where he was sentenced to death: "I wish to procure for my country the guarantee which Washington procured for America...I have parted from everything that was dear to me in this life for my country's cause..."
