Description

The Tomb of the Unknowns is also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and has never been officially named. The U.S. Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza area that now serves as the commemorative site. The original tomb is an upright white marble sarcophagus placed over the initial WW I solider gravesite. West of the World War I burial site are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Subsequently, with advancement in science, the Vietnam War unknown was identified and ultimately exhumed. The crypt remains vacant for that designated war veteran as an honor to remaining unidentified Vietnam veterans.
