Description
Built between 1848 and 1884 as a tribute to George Washington (1732-1799) 1st U.S. President, Founding Father, and the commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Construction took place in two major phases. Lack of funds and political turmoil caused intermittent hiatus. Plans for a national monument began as early as 1783 when Congress proposed that an equestrian statue of George Washington be erected. Sponsored by the Washington National Monument Society.
