(1783 -1830) Leader of South America's struggle for independence from Spain. According to James Goode, author of "Washington Sculpture: A Cultural History of Outdoor Sculpture in the Nation's Capital", the statue is a symbol of the bond between the U.S. and its Latin neighbors.
