Description
Commemorates the service of 209,145 African-American soldiers and sailors - both free and slave - who fought for the Union in the American Civil War. According to the Washington Post, the memorial is the first in the country to honor all African American Union troops and their white officers and is part of a new recognition of the role played by African Americans in the war.
