Overview:   Urban design involves the enhancement of a place's unique urban character through the development and management of its public spaces, including building yards, parks, plazas, and streets. The National Capital Planning Commission is developing a new urban design element for the Federal Elements of the Comprehensive Plan for the National Capital Region that will establish policies designed to make federal public spaces, campuses and buildings more livable, functional, and sustainable.

As part of this effort, Commission staff hosted a public workshop on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 from 6:30 PM– 8:00 PM. At the event, citizens were able to share their ideas for how federal facilities and property can create better public space within Washington, DC and throughout the National Capital Region.
