(File Number 6265)

The Commission approved final site and building plans for two new concession buildings that will be located on Bacon and French Drives, near the Lincoln Memorial. The new buildings are part of overall plans for traffic, security, and visitor service improvements around the memorial. One of the buildings will provide retail and food service while the other will replace existing concession trailers. Measuring 34 feet by 34 feet, the 18-foot-high buildings will consist of stucco walls, wood trim, and copper roofs. Paved seating areas surrounding the new concession buildings will provide 23 tables with seating for nearly 100.

Anacostia Waterfront New Trail
(File Number 6550)

The Commission approved concept site development plans for a new multi-use trail along the Anacostia River. Along the east side of the river, the trail will extend from the Washington Navy Yard to Benning Road; and along the west side of the river, the trail will extend from the Anacostia Naval Station to the Bladensburg Trail in Prince George’s County. The trail system will provide pedestrians and bicyclists with nearly continuous access along the river. This project is a key component of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, a framework plan for revitalizing the waterfront that was first conceived in NCPC’s 1997 Legacy Plan.

Patent Office Staircase Reconstruction
(File Number 6479)

The Commission approved concept plans to reconstruct the south stair of the Patent Office Building. The design of the proposed staircase is based on historical photos of the staircase that was constructed at this site in 1872 and then removed in 1935. Like the historic structure, the new staircase will consist of flights of stairs flanking the central block and meeting at the landing before rising to the entrance; however, the new structure will reflect updates that enhance its functionality. In its approval, the Commission commended the Smithsonian for submitting a proposal that complements the architecture of the Patent Office Building.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center Electrical Switching Boxes
(File Number 6547)

The Commission approved preliminary and final site plans to install electrical switching boxes at several locations throughout the campus. The boxes will provide short circuit/overload protection. Measuring five feet square, the switch boxes will be located below ground where feasible. In cases where the boxes are located above ground, vegetative screening can be used to alleviate their visual impact on the environment.
