A series of federal aid highway acts in the 1940s and 1950s paved the way to the suburbs for residents, businesses, and government facilities. Planning for the Capital Beltway started in the 1950s and the sixty-four mile circumference was completed in 1964. The Beltway changed travel behavior and land use throughout the region, creating a proliferation of destinations and origins.
