Trolley lines facilitated the expansion of residential neighborhoods into the city’s highlands, but automobiles became a preferred mode of transportation by the mid-1920s, in part thanks to L’Enfant’s wide streets and boulevards. Trolleys are ready for a comeback in Washington. NCPC is working with the District Department of Transportation to reintroduce trolley service to the city.
