| Washington, D.C. struggled to obtain fresh drinking water until the completion of the aqueduct from Great Falls in 1862. A more reliable supply to the western areas of the city reinforced social sectoring that was already underway. Working-class residents clustered close to the Navy Yard, while the more affluent tended to settle in the Northwest quadrant of the city. | |||||||
