McNee Dredge

A vast dredging of the Potomac River undertaken in 1882 culminated with the reclamation (creation of landfill from dredged material) of Potomac Flats and the expansion of the National Mall westward from the Washington Monument. In 1902, the Army Corps of Engineers began a similar project on the Anacostia River, depositing the dredged material on the lowlands and swamps along the shore.
