In October 2002, NCPC released the groundbreaking National Capital Urban Design and Security Plan, which provides a variety of perimeter security design solutions. Guided by the plan, the newly designed grounds of the Washington Monument serve as a testament that security can be beautiful. The grounds feature curved paths and low seating walls that secure the national icon while restoring the grace and beauty of the monument’s setting that were previously marred by a ring of jersey barriers.
